For all of time, there has been a huge debate on the subject of sex and gender and the differences between
the two.
The best way to begin this discussion is to define both terms
Sex is defined as the following:
*The biological identification of the individual’s body as female or male.
*The property or quality by which organisms are classified as female or male on the basis of their reproductive organs
and functions.(Yahoo Dictionary)
*The properties that distinguish organisms on the basis of their reproductive roles; "she didn't want to know the sex
of the foetus" (wordreference.com)
Gender is defined as the following:
*The significance a society attaches to the biological categories of female and male... i.e. "masculine and feminine"(Gender
Notes)
*The social identification of a person as male or female (man or woman) and the consequent assignment of a vast complex
of assumptions about the traits, activities, and worth of being female or male.(nature, sex, gender)
*A socially-constructed notion of what is feminine and what is masculine(Sex VS Gender)
The question is now which one is more important, or is there a MORE IMPORTANT determinant at all
This is a website that tackles the many ideas presented in sex determination and gender roles in society. Although
all avenues will not be addressed, i will try to tackle most of them.
